Senior Citizens and What Makes Them Tick

We are born into this world alone and unfortunately, we die alone. But this doesn’t mean that while we are alive, we should not strive to live the best possible life that we can. This statement is true for both young and old people alike.

When it comes to senior citizens there comes a time where they begin to reach the paradox of old age. This means that they have had the privilege to cope with and survive many challenges and have also had the opportunity to show other people how to accept the aging process and find happiness no matter how old they become.

For seniors, video calling via video communication applications can be a wonderful way in which to add fulfillment into their daily lives and maintain the paradox of their old age. Lest we forget that there are many other ways in which senior citizens in care homes can drastically improve their quality of life.

In this article we will discuss ways in which a healthy lifestyle together with efficient communication such as video calling for seniors and how to use video conferencing as a method of communication can awaken the inner child from our ageing loved one.

Positive Mind Positive Life

Fortunately for most people, as they get older, they start to become better at regulating their emotional health and start to look at any challenges with a positive attitude. This is especially true if you maintain contact with them and offer regular emotional support

Encourage your elderly loved one to smile. Even a simple act such as smiling can trigger feel good hormones in the body that are associated with happiness and joy. By starting the day off with a smile and perhaps even a video call you can help your loved one to set the tone for the rest of their day.

This is where technology and video conferencing and communication with your elderly loved one can come into play. Imagine being able to share funny stories together with the simple click of a button on a video tablet or senior tablet phone made specifically for the older generation to navigate easily.

“Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter.” - Mark Twain

Let Them Discover New Interests and Learn New Things

When a senior citizen has something to look forward to when they wake up every morning it can create a whole new world for them. Encourage your loved one to take classes that are offered in the care home that they are living in or even explore hobbies that they have never tried before.

“Every year should teach you something valuable; whether you get the lesson is up to you. Every year brings you closer to expressing your whole and healed self.”  - Oprah Winfrey

Learning new things through all stages of life is an excellent way to foster satisfaction and happiness in older adults especially if they find activities that will keep them interested and occupied. Help them to learn how to use technology and show them how it can benefit them.

Remember that while they are experiencing ongoing learning, they are also improving both their physical and mental health.

With the Care2Talk application senior citizens can get more of a feel for modern technology and learn how it can enrich their lives by allowing them to video call and communication with their loved ones living both near and far.

Make Sure They Stay Healthy

“Of all the self-fulfilling prophecies in our culture the assumption that aging means decline and poor health is probably the deadliest.”  -  Marilyn Ferguson

Keeping your elderly loved one healthy and treating any chronic conditions can help them to stay comfortable and pain free. Remind them to go for regular check-ups and doctors’ appointments especially if they are experiencing any unusual symptoms.

If your loved one sustains an injury or develops a health condition, help is only a phone call away. This is because with the Care2Talk application senior citizens have direct access to doctors and staff at the care home that they are residing in at all times.

Enjoying the Outdoors and Light Exercise

The vitamin D that is found in sunshine can be an excellent mood booster for people of all ages. If your loves one seems depressed or is feeling a little down, then a short walk in the garden with you are their caregiver can work wonders for their emotional wellbeing.

Alternatively let them sit on a chair in the garden and enjoy the fresh air and beautiful smells of nature.

Get Them Involved in The Community

Get your loved one to give back to the community by offering up some of their skills. Maybe your loved one is able to knit scarves or blankets for the homeless or even become part of a community outreach.  By doing this they start to feel good about themselves and the difference that they are able to make in the lives of others.

A senior citizen who feels appreciated and needed feels like they have a reason to live and wants to keep living the best life that they can.

Family and Friends Are Important

As we age social connections become one of the most important parts of our life. Friends and family have the ability to lift an elderly person up and make them feel better when they are feeling sad or depressed.

Friends and family are also the people that they are able to celebrate with and share special moments with.Keeping in contact with friends and family is vital to the mental and emotional well-being of our elderly loved ones.

Seniors who require continuous supervision or simply a little bit of help with household tasks can enjoy a significantly better quality of life when living in a care home with professional caregivers.
